Smoke-free Campus Initiative
Recommendations for
Communication Tools

Hospitals are encouraged to develop the following communications materials and methods to help communicate their smoke-free initiative and new policies. The other documents in this tool kit are provided to assist in creating content for these communications tools.

Internal Communication Tools

  • Updated Human Resources Policy
  • Talking Points for hospital leadership
  • Frequently Asked Questions for employees
  • Internal newsletter article(s) (employees and visitors)
  • Leadership and staff meetings
  • Training sessions for managers
  • Hospital Intranet, all staff e-mails
  • Help hot line/network, onsite counselors
  • Paycheck inserts
  • Wallet cards
  • Cessation educational programming for employees
  • Resources/references documents

External Communication Tools

  • Hospital Web site
  • Frequently Asked Questions for the public (post on Web site)
  • News releases to local media
  • Flyers in patient appointment reminders
  • Educational events for community members

Campus Signage

  • Signs, posters, displays and pamphlets placed in hospital lobbies, waiting areas
  • Notices in present designated smoking areas
  • Tip/reminder cards to be available in waiting areas for visitors
