Marianne Araujo, R.N., Ph.D., FACHE, was recently named senior vice president, patient care services, and chief nursing officer at St. James Hospital and Health Centers, which operates hospitals in Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields. In this newly created position, Araujo will oversee all clinical and support areas.
Ginger Barthel, R.N., vice president of clinical operations at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, received one of the three SAGE (Significant Advisor Guide and Enlightener) awards at the 7th Annual Power of Nursing Leadership celebration in October. The award spotlights Illinois nurses for their leadership and mentoring contributions.
Sandy Kramer, R.N., Nursing Supervisor at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, was recognized as Someone You Should Know and honored with a Service Excellence Award because she exemplifies the facility's core values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence and Service. Kramer has worked at Resurrection for more than 30 years.
Anthony Marinelli, M.D., medical director of the Intensive Care Unit and Respiratory Care at West Suburban Medical Center, was named Outstanding Clinician by the American Thoracic Society. This award is presented to an individual who embodies excellence in the clinical practice of lung health medicine and has made substantial contributions in the clinical care of patients with lung disease and to the American Thoracic Society/American Lung Association on a local or national level.
The Alexian Brothers Health System Foundation recently announced the appointment of Chicago-area business and community leader, George A. Moser to the position of chairman of the board. Moser is the chairman and CEO of Charter National Bank and Trust and Stonegate Properties, Inc. This marks the first major board appointment for Alexian’s Foundation, which serves the philanthropic arm of the Alexian Brothers Hospital Network.
Kim Nagy, R.N., M.S., A.P.N./C.N.S., has begun her new duties as director of maternity services at Lake Forest Hospital. Nagy is an advanced practical nurse specialist in adult health, with a specialized focus in obstetrical nursing.
Ketul J. Patel was recently named senior vice president, strategy and market development, at St. James Hospital and Health Centers, which operates hospitals in Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields. Patel will be responsible for strategy formulation; physician relations and recruitment; marketing and communications; new business and service line development; the Learning Institute and education services in this newly created position. He comes to St. James from Sharp HealthCare in San Diego, where he worked as a corporate vice president.
Dr. Parag V. Patel, medical director of the cardiac intensive care unit at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, traveled to Kenya last month to bring essential medical equipment for the Kenyatta National Hospital. Dr. Patel partnered with Advocate Medical Group/Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and several medical manufacturing companies to collect defibrillators, drug-coated cardiac stents, pacemakers, and monitors that are valued at nearly $500,000.
Thomas Rivera, chairman of the board of directors at St. Alexius Medical Center, was recently named the recipient of the Illinois Hospital Association's 2004 Distinguished Service Award. The award, one of the top honors in health care, recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to health care delivery, health education or other services that improve the health of Illinoisans. Rivera's work at St. Alexius contributed to the expansion of the medical center's diabetic education program and its outpatient services.
After 13 years of service, John H. Schwartz, resigned as president of Advocate Trinity Hospital on Nov. 1. Ken Rojek, vice president of business development for Advocate Health Care, is serving as interim president of Trinity.
Vineata Smith, clinical coordinator of the Family Practice Residency Program, has been selected as West Suburban Medical Center’s Someone You Should Know. Smith was nominated by Jorgensen because of her devotion to the Mission of Resurrection Health Care as well as her commitment to the Family Practice Residency Program and the success of West Suburban Medical Center.
The Polish American Association (PAA) named Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center medical staff member Mark Sobor, M.D., and wife Anna Zolkowski-Sobor the 2004 Presidential Award recipients for their longstanding commitment of time and resources to serving the Polish community in Chicago. Dr. Sobor has served as the volunteer medical director of PAA’s outpatient substance abuse treatment center for more than 10 years and has been providing free care for the indigent and homeless.
Kathy Voss, R.N., M.S., has been appointed director of nursing and staff development at Our Lady of the Resurrection Health Care. Voss comes to OLR with 22 years of direct clinical experience. In her new position, Voss will provide administrative leadership and will oversee organizational staff development for the entire nursing division.
Daniel H. Winship, M.D., has been appointed chief of the
Cook County Bureau of Health Services. He replaces Ruth M. Rothstein, who
retired this summer. Dr. Winship, who has more than 35 years in health care
leadership positions, will oversee an $880 million budget of one the largest
public health care systems in the country.
Roland Abellera has been appointed vice president, quality and corporate compliance, at Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center (Chicago). Abellera joined Saint Bernard in 1992 as director of medical records.
Steven M. Armbrust, M.D., a family practice physician at Central DuPage Hospital (Winfield), was named the 2004 Family Physician of the Year by the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians.
William Briner, M.D., an Advocate Medical Group family practice physician and medical director of the Sports Medicine Center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital (Park Ridge), served as the primary volunteer physician for the U.S. athletes competing in indoor volleyball at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Matthew Brown, M.D., an assistant clinical professor in the department of family medicine at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago, was named director of the family practice residency program at Advocate Christ Medical Center (Oak Lawn).
Alan H. Channing is the new president and CEO of Sinai Health System (Chicago). Channing, most recently the president of Channing Consulting Group in New York, has more than 17 years experience as CEO of several inner-city not-for-profit and public hospitals. Channing replaces Benn Greenspan, who retired this summer after 13 years as CEO of Sinai Health System.
Connie Curran, Ed.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., has been appointed to a three-year term as chairperson of Silver Cross Hospital's (Joliet) Board of Directors. She is the first woman and nurse board chairperson in Silver Cross' 109-year history.
Mary Hillard, R.N., M.S.N., has been appointed vice president of patient care services at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center (Chicago). Hillard assumes executive leadership responsibilities in the delivery of nursing practices that provide excellent patient care and serve the health care needs of the community.
The Society of Human Resource Professionals (SHRP), the Chicago chapter of the national Society of Human Resource Management, has announced Dean Manheimer, senior vice president of Human Resources at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare (Chicago), as the 2004 recipient of the Chicagoland HR Professional of the Year award. He will be recognized at the SHRP Annual Dinner Event Sept. 23 at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel Chicago.
Edward A. Millar, emeritus chief of staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children (Chicago) recently won the Henrietta Herbolsheimer Award from the Chicago Medical Society for a lifetime of service to children. For more than 50 years, Dr. Millar has promoted Shriners' cause of providing the best in medical care to children with disabilities at no charge.
David Nelson, vice president of finance/CFO at St. Francis Hospital & Health Center (Blue Island), will participate in the United Kingdom/U.S. Exchange event, an international exchange program for hospital financial administrators. The board of directors of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, a national association of financial officers, selected Nelson as one of 15 CFOs to participate in the two-year program.
Joseph Ottolino was appointed director of imaging services at Saint Joseph Hospital (Chicago). In his new position, Ottolino will direct the overall activities of the Imaging Services Department to ensure efficient and effective operation.
Kathy Payne, R.N., R.V.T., has been appointed director of cardiology services at Saint Joseph Hospital (Chicago). In this position, Payne will be responsible for overseeing the Cardiac Catherization Laboratory, Heart Station, Vascular Laboratory and Cardiac Rehabilitation.
Angelique Richard, R.N., Ph.D., has been appointed vice president, patient care services, for Saint Francis Hospital (Evanston). Dr. Richard most recently served as the chief nurse executive at GlenOaks Hospital since 1996 where she focused on improving the professional practice of nursing.
Tracy Rogers was named chief executive officer at Weiss Memorial Hospital (Chicago). Most recently, Rogers was president and founder of The Tajer Group.
Deanna Schoneberger, R.N., has been appointed director of business development for the Diamond Headache Inpatient Unit at Saint Joseph Hospital (Chicago). In her new position, Schoneberger will be responsible for developing and implementing business development and marketing programs.
Timothy P. Selz was appointed the new president and chief executive officer of Provena Mercy Center (Aurora). He brings 24 years of health care administration experience in Illinois to his new position.
Carolynn Zonia, D.O., F.A.C.E.P., F.A.C.O.E.P., a Saint Francis Hospital (Evanston) Emergency Department physician, was one of two doctors from Illinois honored to receive the "2004 Ron W. Lee, M.D., Excellence in Pediatric Awards." The awards are presented annually by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children program.

Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers recently recognized Sister M. Joseph Casey, L.C.M., M.S.N., for 55 years of service. Casey is the most tenured employee in Little Company’s history. She began her career as a nurses’ aide at the age of 14.
Kevin Scanlan, executive vice president of the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council, was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Conference of Metropolitan Hospital Associations (CMHA). Scanlan, 54, will be one of two at-large members of the seven-person Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for the CMHA. He will serve a three-year term. The CMHA is a collection of 30 health care associations located in major metropolitan areas around the United States. Each association represents member hospitals and health care institutions in a local geographic area. Chicago-based MCHC is a charter member of the CMHA, and one of its largest associations. Scanlan follows in a line of MCHC executives who have been involved with the CMHA.
Carol Ann Schleffendorf, R.N., M.S., has been appointed director of medical/surgical units at Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago, a member of Resurrection Health Care. In her new position, Schleffendorf will be responsible for overseeing medical and surgical units as well as the hospital’s oncology and HIV units. Before assuming her new position, she was the vice president of patient care services at Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park and the director of surgical services at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston.
Daniel Winship, the former dean of the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, was nominated to replace Ruth Rothstein as chief of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services. If the Cook County Board approves, Winship would take over in August. Board President John Stroger nominated Winship, 70, who most recently was vice chancellor and chief executive officer of University of Missouri Health Care until last year. Winship was dean of Loyola’s medical school from 1990-99 when he left for Missouri. He currently is on a fellowship at the Association of American Medical Colleges in Washington and is a professor of medicine at University of Missouri Health Care.
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital (Park Ridge) honored its five 2003 MVP Value Leaders during Associate Appreciation Week (April 19-24). The five leaders were chosen from more than 4,000 SPIRIT award recipients. The Value Leaders were Mariamma Abraham, R.N. (compassion); Muoi Huynh, housekeeping (equality); Ruven Levitan, M.D., gastroenterology (excellence); Barbara Fine, RDLDN (partnership); and Douglas Samuelson, pharmacy (stewardship). The SPIRIT associate recognition program started at Lutheran General in 1987.
Hospice of Northeastern Illinois and Hospice Foundation of Northeastern Illinois recently appointed the following new members to its Board of Directors: Russell E. Feurer of Palatine; Robert Cormier, Jr., of Crystal Lake; John Cox, M.D., of Inverness; and Lynn MacMillan, R.N., of Schaumburg. New appointees to the Board of Trustees are George C. Yapp of Barrington, Stephen D. Berry of Arlington Heights, Thomas C. Liebman of Barrington and Hal Stinespring of Crystal Lake.
Saint Francis Hospital (Evanston) recently announced its 2004-05 medical staff officers: William Maloney, M.D., president; Ann Kinnealey, M.D., president-elect; and Janis Atkinson, M.D., secretary/treasurer. Maloney has been on staff since 1991 and is the chair of the hospital’s department of emergency medicine and medical director of the emergency department. Kinnealey has been on staff since 1992 and is chair of the oncology section in the department of medicine. Atkinson has been on staff since 1992 and is chair of the pathology department and medical director of the laboratory.

Jack Barto, president and chief executive officer of Provena Mercy Center (Aurora), has resigned his position. He will be assuming a leadership role at a facility in North Carolina. The Provena Mercy Center Board of Directors is reviewing its option and may appoint an interim president while recruiting.
Jeannie C. Frey has been named senior vice president, legal affairs, at Resurrection Health Care (Chicago). Frey was previously a partner with McDermott, Will & Emery, Resurrection Health Care’s primary law firm, where she specialized in health care law for more than eight years. She graduated with high honors from the University of Colorado, Boulder and earned a Juris Doctor law degree from Yale University Law School. (include photo)
Arthur B. Koenigsberger has been named vice president, surgical and support services at Holy Family Medical Center (Des Plaines) and Resurrection Medical Center (Chicago). He will oversee the operations and development of services for both hospitals. Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago) has recruited renowned heart surgeon Patrick McCarthy, M.D. to lead its division of cardiac surgery and co-direct the new Northwestern Memorial Heart Institute. Dr. McCarthy was most recently the surgical director of the George M. and Linda H. Kaufman Center for Heart Failure and the program director of the Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support programs at the Cleveland Clinic.
Timothy McCormick has been named vice president of missions and community development for Saint Anthony Hospital (Chicago). Previously, he served as regional director for Resurrection Health Care Senior Services Division. McCormick received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University and earned a master’s in divinity, a master’s in business administration and a master’s in human resource management.
Margaret McDermott was named executive vice president and chief executive office of Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (Chicago), the name for the consolidated Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center and Saint Elizabeth Hospital. McDermott has served as CEO for Saint Elizabeth Hospital since 2001 and has more than 30 years of health care experience. (include photo)
Alexian Brothers Medical Center (Elk Grove Village) has appointed Kathleen Prunty as vice president of human resources and hospital services. Most recently, Prunty served as director if patient support services for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. She earned her master’s degree in hospital administration and human resource development from Dominican University.
Thomas A. Reitinger, president and chief executive officer of Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2004. Reitinger was instrumental in implementing major improvements to the facility, including expansion and renovation of obstetrical services, the cardiac catheterization laboratories, radiation therapy, as well the hospital entrance and registration areas. A search committee comprised of medical center board and staff members will work with a national search firm to recruit a replacement.
Nabil Saleh, M.D. was named the new president of the medical staff at Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park. Dr. Saleh has been a practicing pediatrician on staff at Westlake since 1981. He completed his medical education at Alexandria Hospital in Egypt and his residency in pediatrics and neonatology at Northampton General Hospital, Kettering General and the Oxford Regional Hospital Board in England. Debra Susie-Lattner, M.D. has been appointed vice president of medical affairs at Alexian Brothers Medical Center (Elk Grove Village). Dr. Susie-Lattner formerly served as president of the medical staff at Alexian Brothers. She is board-certified in internal medicine and earned her medical degree from the University of Iowa. Thomas Vargish, M.D. has been selected as the new chairman of surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Group and interim chairman of surgery at Chicago Medical School. Dr. Vargish, a graduate of New York University Medical School, completed his general surgery training in New York University and at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. He is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care.
Resurrection Health Care (Chicago) has appointed John R. Walton to executive vice president and chief executive office of its senior services division. Most recently, Walton was the chief operating officer of Integrated Health Services, Inc. He received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University, Chicago, a master’s in health administration from the University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
