Reminder: Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detector, it's the law! Carbon monoxide earned its name as the “silent killer” because it is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that kills about 500 people in the United States each year. Some 15,000 Americans seek medical attention every year due to carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2006, the Illinois Poison Center hotline handled 355 calls related to carbon monoxide from September through November. |

Lead Paint Recalls: Use Caution with Gifts this Holiday Season Be sure to use caution during the season of giving. This year consumers received a rude awakening after millions of playthings decorated with toxic lead paint were recalled. In September during a joint United States-China summit on consumer product safety, China signed an agreement to prohibit the use of lead paint on toys exported to the U.S. In the pact, Beijing also pledged to step up inspections of its exports and take other steps to ensure that those products meet U.S. standards. Lead paint has been banned in the U.S. since 1978. |
