Who answers your call?
Calls are answered by pharmacists, nurses, physicians and other poison specialists.
When do you need to call the IPC?
The IPC provides assistance for persons who have been exposed to a poison, are concerned about the amount of medicine they may have taken, are involved in a chemical exposure at work or home, or need information about whether a substance is a poison. Call as soon as you think, or even suspect, a poisoning has occurred. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
The IPC also welcomes general questions and inquiries from the public regarding poisoning-related topic.
Who should call the IPC?
The IPC serves all 102 counties of Illinois and takes calls from the public and health care professionals. The IPC accepts calls from schools, the workplace, hospitals and other health care providers. All persons residing, working or visiting in Illinois can access the service.
Getting to the IPC
Callers needing poisoning information or treatment recommendations should call the IPC at 1-800-222-1222 – do not come to the IPC. If you are attending an educational course at the IPC, get directions now.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Illinois Poison Center (IPC) is to provide state-of-the-art poison information to health care professionals and all residents of the 102 counties of Illinois. Through its services, the IPC seeks to improve the quality of patient outcomes, decrease the number of unnecessary emergency room visits and promote poison prevention to the people of Illinois.
