Millions Poisoned Each Year
Each year, more than 2 million people are accidentally poisoned in the United States – and the majority of those poisoned are children. In fact, poisoning is one of the leading health emergencies for children in both Illinois and the nation.
Unfortunately, poisons are found everywhere – in our homes, workplaces, schools, backyards, garages – even in our purses. Vitamins can be mistaken for candy. Medication mix-ups happen. Toxic chemical spills can cause burns to a person’s skin and emit dangerous fumes. Even insect bites can be poisonous. |

Illinois Poison Center is Here to Help
That’s where certified poison control specialists – physicians, nurses and pharmacists – from the Illinois Poison Center come in. We are here 24-hours-a day, 365-days-a year. Each day, these specialists in toxicology handle confidential telephone calls from the public and health care professionals on issues ranging from treatment of poisonings, overdoses, medication errors, occupational accidents, and other poison-related concerns.

· Reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by poisoning |
· Educate Illinois families and children about the importance of poison prevention by offering education outreach programs to schools and senior citizen centers |
· Reduce health care costs by managing the majority of poisonings at the site, via telephone, rather than in the emergency room |
