Why should I become a poison prevention educator?
If you want to make a difference in your community, become an IPC poison prevention educator.
What does a poison prevention educator do?
Poison prevention educators help spread poison prevention awareness by integrating poison safety and prevention information into their current education activities. This can be as simple as distributing stickers, magnets brochures and fact sheets, while more focused education can occur during classroom presentations, health-related classes and community meetings.
Who can be a poison prevention educator?
Anyone can be a poison prevention educator – nurses, community educators, librarians, medical residents and students, related hospital and public health professionals, parents, grandparents, teachers and all interested community members.
Is there special training for poison prevention educators?
Yes, and now there are two ways to take the FREE Poison Prevention Educator Training course:
Online Training
You can receive the training needed to become a registered IPC poison prevention educator from the convenience of your office, school, library or home. The training consists of seven learning modules designed to be taken in 15-minute increments. Learn more about the course or register now!
In-Person Workshops
The IPC outreach and education staff also hosts FREE, in-person workshops (approximately 2 hours) throughout the year. Live workshops provide participants with the same tools and training necessary to become poison prevention educators. Contact the outreach coordinator at vdance@ilpoison.org or 312-906-6125 to find out when the next training workshop will be held in your area.
What does training cover?
In-person workshops and the online training program cover the same material:
¨ The history of the Illinois Poison Center and current facts and figures
¨ What is a poison
¨ Major poisoning statistics
¨ How to prevent poisonings
¨ Key prevention messages for various audiences
¨ Tips for conducting poison prevention education presentations
¨ Methods for finding online resources
After completing the course, registered poison prevention educators can receive unlimited access to FREE educational materials and presentation tools via an online ordering system.
Can I get trained if I don’t live in the Chicago area?
Absolutely! If you have Internet access, you can take the online training. Or if you prefer to attend an in-person training, the IPC has twelve satellite education centers throughout the state. The education coordinators at the satellite centers can train you to become an IPC poison prevention educator. Find your closest satellite education center.
