INTRODUCTION TO CAREERS IN REHABILITATION AND PSYCHIATRY

Those individuals interested in rehabilitative and psychiatric careers would find themselves treating injured or ill patients in a variety of ways including: surgery, diet, exercise, psychological and psychiatric counseling; as well as therapeutic training in speech-language pathology, respiratory, physical, occupational and other therapeutic fields. Therapy careers are a combination of medical technology and equipment, and interpersonal, human relations skills.

Therapists work with all kinds of patients including those injured in an accident, diseased and physically or mentally handicapped. They help a patient regain or develop the skills necessary for daily and/or work activities. The work of a therapist takes commitment, patience, compassion, love and respect for human life. There may be times when medical technology and a therapists' advanced skills and energy are not enough to repair hearing or cure paralyzation, but a dedicated therapist will try to help patients cope and learn maximum independence no matter what the disability.
