Sterile Processing & Distribution Technician

The sterile processing and distribution technician (SPDT) provides decontamination, sterilization and distribution functions in hospitals and health care facilities.

Some of their responsibilities might include:
Maintaining infection control standards for the health and safety of patients, medical staff, and personnel
Cleaning, processing, assembling, sterilizing, storing and distributing medical devices and supplies used in patient care


Sterile processing and distribution technicians are employed in nursing units, emergency departments, operating and delivery rooms, nurseries, outpatient departments and laboratories.

Educational Requirements
The SPDT is a 12-month, program of didactic instruction and clinical experience leading to a certificate. Applicants for the program must be 18 years of age or older, have a high school diploma or GED certificate, and have completed English 101.
