Phlebotomist
The phlebotomist works under general supervision of laboratory personnel. By following established laboratory procedures, the phlebotomist obtains venous and capillary blood specimens needed for laboratory tests. They transport and deliver lab specimens to specialized laboratory areas.
They must also verify and enter patient identification information on specimen labels. They also perform related clerical duties such as logging and filing.
Job Outlook
The trend in hospitals today is multi-skill level workers. A single skill such as phlebotomy is not as lucrative as having multi-skills such as phlebotomy, EKG, and basic respiratory. The more skilled the individual the better employment opportunities.
Educational Requirements
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Training is either done on the job or through a community college or vocational center.
