Nursing Aide
Nursing aides, also called nurse assistants or orderlies, work as auxiliary employees in an entry-level position in a department of nursing, helping the professional nursing staff in the care of sick or disabled patients. In mental health facilities, nursing
homes or home health care agencies, these employees may also be called psychiatric aides, geriatric aides or home health aides.
Depending on the type of facility and the type of patient being cared for, the duties of the nursing aide vary-from cleaning patients' rooms and other household tasks to assisting in patient care. The nursing aide works under the direct supervision of the nursing staff.
| Some of their responsibilities might include: |
| | Answering patient bed calls |
| | Delivering messages |
| | Serving and collecting food trays |
| | Feeding patients who are unable to feed themselves |
| | Assisting patients with their personal hygiene |
| | Giving massages and alcohol rubs |
| | Reporting all unusual conditions and reactions of patients to the nurses in charge |
In assisting in basic patient care, the nursing aide may administer catheterization treatment, take and record temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates. They may also accompany patients during exercise periods, transport patients in
wheelchairs and stretchers, and assist the nurses in lifting and turning patients in bed. With special training they may also transport and set up catheterization, sterilization, respiratory, traction, and mobile X-ray equipment.
Job Outlook
Nursing aides are in great demand in long-term care and home health care facilities. They may advance to licensed practical nurses or registered nurses with formal training and education.
Educational Requirements
A high school diploma or equivalent is recommended. High school preparation should include science and math. Good communication skills are a must. In Chicago, a second language of Spanish is recommended. Some hospitals may train on the job. This is an entry-level position and a nurse assistant program through a community college is needed. Nurse assistants working in long-term care must be certified through the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). Certification requires graduating from a state approved nursing aide/assistant program and successfully passing a state examination.
