Kinesiotherapist

Kinesiotherapy treats the effects of disease, injury, and congenital disorders through therapeutic exercise. Kinesiotherapy helps develop physical fitness, increase functional mobility and independence, and improve psychosocial behavior.

Some of the responsibilities might include:
Developing and implementing exercise programs to improve the quality of life and health for adults and children
Modifying and evaluating adapted exercise programs


Kinesiotherapy offers six areas of specialization: geriatric care, psychiatric care, extended hospital care, treatment of physically handicapped children, treatment of developmentally disabled, and treatment in special categories (cardiac, amputee rehabilitation, driver training rehabilitation, and adapted physical education).

Job Outlook
Kinesiotherapy treatment can take place in: schools for the handicapped; nursing homes; private hospitals; community health service agencies; private homes; and rehabilitation clinics specializing in industrial fitness and work hardening programs, therapeutic aquatics, and clinical exercise programs.

Educational Requirements
The kinesiotherapist must graduate from an institution accredited by the American Kinesiotherapy Association. A physical education major is a prerequisite with a specialization in kinesiotherapy. Following graduation students are required to complete a 1,000-hour clinical internship. National and state certification is available.
