Dental Hygienist

The dental hygienist is an oral health clinician and educator. Under the supervision of the dentist, the dental hygienist provides services which contribute to the prevention of dental diseases and good oral hygiene care.

Some of the functions routinely performed by a dental hygienist include:
Removing calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from above and below the gum line
Thoroughly examining the teeth and oral structure
Processing and interpreting dental X-rays
Providing oral cancer and blood pressure screenings
Instructing patients on proper oral health care such as brushing and flossing
Counseling and providing dietary analysis
Applying cavity-preventing agents, such as fluoride and sealants

Most dental hygienists are employed in dental offices. Some may find work in hospitals, health maintenance organizations, private and state institutions, schools, private industry and community health agencies. Other than dentists, dental hygienists are the only other member of the dental health care team licensed to provide dental treatment.

Job Outlook
Employment opportunities for dental hygienists are excellent. The demand for qualified hygienists is growing as a result of public awareness of preventive health practices and increased participation in dental pre-payment plans.

Educational Requirements
Individuals must complete a minimum of two years of college in an accredited dental hygiene program. Programs are offered at community colleges, dental schools, colleges and technical schools. Upon successful completion, candidates are eligible for professional licensure. Bachelor degree and master degree programs are available for students interested in broadening their educational background. Dental hygiene studies include anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, oral anatomy, histology, nutrition, first aid, psychology, sociology, public health and oral pathology.
