The economic contribution of metropolitan Chicago area hospitals on the region’s economy

The Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council (MCHC) recently commissioned an economic impact study, The Value of Caring: The Economic Contribution of Metropolitan Chicago Area Hospitals on the Region’s Economy. MCHC publicly released the findings of this study at a press conference on Jan. 12, 2005. This study is a follow up to a previously conducted economic impact study released by MCHC in 1994.

The Value of Caring found that MCHC member hospitals have an enormous impact on the local economy. The study reports that, in 2003, metropolitan Chicago-area hospitals:

Directly and secondarily employed 402,290 workers
Generated $23.7 billion in personal income for the residents of the region;
Contributed $1.8 billion in capital improvements to the economy; and
Generated better-paying and sustainable employment opportunities – with an average salary and benefits package of $63,088; that is approximately $20,000 more than the regional average salary and benefits package of $43,021.
